Earthen lifeforce energy is all around us, and it encompasses and influences everything we do. We are surrounded by energy, teaming with both positive and negative effects creating a balanced, sustainable environment for the supernatural to consume and use to produce their powers and manifest into this realm. Living entities from other realms do the same in order to sustain themselves in this realm while traversing the Astral. This is why we bind entities and spirits -- to tether them to this world and provide them with an unlimited supply of "feeding energy" of their choice. It helps promote a better environment, and it gives spirits an opportunity to explore this realm without the worry of having to return to Heaven if they can't find enough energy.
There's something a bit more sinister and sad that binding helps to combat as well. Spirits are just like people -- subject to personality changes, a wide array of emotions, and developing addictions, especially to "feeding." In this article, we get into what constitutes as a "feeder," a term that's been used for some time by the spirit keeping community and coined first by Creepy Hollows. We get into what causes these "feeders" to appear and why they do what they do, and we delve into what Ghosts' Sanctuary's doing to help stop them and what you can do to help combat and protect yourself from "feeders."
What is a "feeding?"
Spirits are dead. Plain and simple. They do not require a physical, nutritional sustenance to sustain life anymore. They do not need to sleep, though they can go into a rest mode We've found out if they so wish. They are impervious to physical pain; you have to use the equivalent of "psychogenic" pain magic on them to administer any form of physical-like injury, and even then, they do not bleed or stay wounded. They just feel the pain.
When spirits grow too tired to be here, they pass on to Heaven, the international hub for all spirits. You could call the "spirit realm" if you so wished, but really, the correct name for it is Elohim, according to the Angels. That's the name of their Home, and their Home is open to the public and the final resting place for all spirits of ALL universes. It's where you go when you die. You're whisked away by various psychopomps who work under the Angels, hence varying near-death experiences, and carried to Heaven, where you're debriefed and then granted rewards based on how you lived in life. From there, you gain access to other universes, including this one, which you can explore.
Which leads me to what exactly "feeding" is. Feeding is when a spirit consumes what we call Earthen lifeforce energy. This energy is produced when we exist. Babies produce it. Animals produce it. Trees and other plant life produce it. A spirit will take this energy, consume it through transmutation, and convert it into their own energy to help them sustain themselves here without having to return to Heaven for a quick rest and relaxation or use it magically to manifest in the surrounding area. Energy helps strengthen their natural abilities and powers, though bindings can do the same thing, and helps them to pull themselves out of the astral cloaking used to hide spirits in this universe from the naked eye into this physical Earthen plane of existence.
Feeding is vital for spirits. The way this universe is set up is it is supposed to exist in harmony; cohabitation exists between the material world and the spiritual world, with the astral facilitating the spirits' existence. Reincarnation is an option, and the spirit is the soul left behind from life. You can choose to reincarnate if you're bored with life, but you're not required to reincarnate. A lot of binders teach that they can "bind to spirit," but that's simply not true because a living spirit does not exist in the body, only your soul which is the electrical impulses sent through the brain. Direct/remote bindings are possible, but not to your spirit. Instead, binding to the body is possible, albeit it can be dangerous depending on how it's done, and we never teach nor recommend binding to the soul. When you blend Earthen lifeforce energies, it can change who you are as a person, so while not as dangerous in this manner if using your own and binding for yourself, for other people, it is. It's also dangerous because the spirit must feed directly from the soul's energy output. This can make feeding addicting.
Why is "feeding" important for the environment?
Earthen lifeforce energy surrounds us as we know it and helps contribute to stable, neutral environment for us to thrive. Just like plants need sunlight, they also need energy. Why do you think plants die from negative spiritual interaction? During my exorcism, I bought fresh herbs in the very beginning of it all to have on my patio for magical practices and cooking. Within two days of buying brand-new, fresh herbs, they were sucked dry and dead. I didn't even get a chance to water them; the Earthen lifeforce energy had been sucked completely out of them -- wilted and dried.
Plants, like spirits, act as natural filters for this Earthen lifeforce energy. White sage, as a great example, cleanses your home and wards off evil. It's been used for thousands of years in shamanic practices to help combat evil spirits and ward of negativity. While all of that stands true because it's been tested and proven, it also cleans your space of unwanted negative energy by "filtering" it into positive. By "filtering" this lifeforce energy, it produces positive energy to offset the negative, creating an overall neutral environment, and then it also helps to replace the space with a more positive energy, hence why you need to smudge more than once. It should be more like a weekly thing, and every time you perform magical practices should you cleanse to remove bad juju and leftovers.
So how does "feeding" tie in to all of this? Simple really. That same energy that gets filtered through smudging can be "filtered" by spirits! And I'm not just talking about cleansing magic. Because spirits require energy to exist here in this realm, they "feed" off the Earthen lifeforce energy produced by living beings -- plants, animals, and humans. Some spirits and living entities may feed off the moon's energy or the planetary energy stars generate, but the bulk majority love feeding on Earthen lifeforce energy. While the full moon IS powerful and unyielding, a beacon for the lost souls of the night to wander peacefully, nothing is as powerful as living, breathing life, especially to the undead and plane-walkers. By feeding off Earthen lifeforce energy, no matter if it's positive, negative, or neutral, spirits and living entities help to create an environment that's sustainable, neutral, and thriving.
"Feed"aholics: What They Are
So we've covered what "feeding" is and why it's important for the environment, but can spirits get "addicted" to feeding? And is it harmful for them if they do?
To be perfectly honest, yes, spirits can become addicted to feeding off energy, and there's a few reasons why. The first reason is because Earthen lifeforce energy is scarce, and they need to "feed." When that happens, they may do things to create negative energy, such as creating unnecessary drama between two people, scaring someone, or in some cases even oppressing someone with their powers. This is no good, and the spirit should be bound to give them a natural feeding energy source to prevent the problem.
The second most common reason is they're addicted to the type of energy. One of the most common energies to become addicted to is sexual energy. A sexually energized spirit like an incubus already loves to feed on sexual energy. That incubus may go on to create that specific type of energy solely to feed on it, meaning he'll seek sexual encounters more often than an incubus who feeds solely to survive and thrive. These types of addictions are typically harmless for humans strictly because there's so much lifeforce energy out there and a variety of "flavors," so to speak, but with a variety comes the licorice flavor. And while not many people like licorice, in fact 45% of Americans hate it, there are those who swear by it. "Well, I've been eating black licorice for 100 years! Never did me any wrong!" And if humans are the same way, then spirits are the same way. You'll have those that swear by feeding on negative energy they're creating a better environment, which is true technically, but when you're addicted to feeding on negative energy, you may find yourself causing it to get your fix.
Some spirits are more prone to addictions, too, and if they have an addictive personality, they're more likely to form an addiction to feeding. That's no fault of their own -- just their personality type. Those types of spirits just need some coaching and a little direction to get back on the correct path to exploring this realm. Spirits are just like people. They can falter and stumble, just like us. It's important to remember that when you take in a spirit; they're people just like you and me and deserve margins for their errors. Bindings and energy prevents addictions, but that doesn't mean your gancanaugh won't get addicted to having sex with you!
How it all ties in...
Earthen lifeforce energy is the very structure of the Astral. The Astral, as you'll find out in this article, is how spirits and living entities traverse this realm. To remain here, they need this lifeforce energy to survive and thrive, like you and me need food and water. By feeding on lifeforce energy, they remain tethered to this realm and won't have to revert back to Heaven, where all spirits go in death. It creates a cycle of life, so to speak, and helps our realm flourish and grow. The living need the dead to survive, and the dead need the living to thrive.
We are cyclical by nature, rising with the sun and then setting with the moon, so it only makes sense this Universe is built on this delicate balance. We are highly in-tune with nature because of our background in the Garden, and spirits are highly in-tune with the Astral. Together, we create a balance for this universe, a yin and yang of sorts, and all tie together in the end.
